1st Stubbington triumphs in Fairtrade competition
The competition was stiff as over 50 Scouts representing 12 teams from the Fareham West district gathered to take part in their annual cooking competition. The competition challenges young people to cook a three course meal using a 2 ring gas burner on a budget of only £3 per head.
Organiser of the event, Anton Strzelec said ‘We always have a theme and this year to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight we made the challenge a little more difficult by insisting that all foods were either Fairtrade or local produce. The Fairtrade Foundation is the independent non-profit organisation whose vision is of a world in which justice and sustainable development are at the heart of trade structures and practices so that everyone, through their work, can maintain a decent and dignified livelihood. Fairtrade fortnight runs until the 7th March and we felt it important that we as Scouts, helped to promote this event.’
A team of independent judges watched as the youngsters prepared, cooked and presented their meals, paying close attention to safe food handling, originality, taste and quality of the dishes. The menus were wide and varied, from pork in a plum sauce – using meat from Titchfield pigs – to curries, salads and pates. The judges had a difficult job on their hands. Head judge Judi Bushnell from Fareham Scout Fellowship said ‘The standard that these young people achieve gets higher each year and they have all impressed us with their cooking skills and ability to produce high quality menus on low budgets using both local produce and Fairtrade ingredients’
The winners of the event were 1st Stubbington who wowed the judges with their menu of Tahini Salad and Cajun Burgers followed by Ginger & Lime Cheesecake. They were followed closely by teams from 1st Parkgate and 1st Warsash. All of the young people that took part achieved the standards required for their Scout Chef’s badge.

Everett’s Coppice is a local site and SSSI, primarily used by Fareham East and Fareham West Scouts for overnight and weekend activities. We have received this update from the committee:
The Everett’s Coppice committee have decided to put a combination lock on the pedestrian gate at Everett’s to deter non-Scouting people from using the coppice. Initially it will be for a six month period to see if it works successfully and will then be reviewed.
The combination will be given to you when you book through Joy French. Set the combination and then push the black button on the bottom of the lock to release it. Don’t forget to replace when leaving the coppice.

Details for booking and using the site are available in the Secure Area of this website. You will have to be registered and approved (a manual process) before you can get to the secure area.
